Backstage at Llandudno Summer Shows

We’ve been involved with the summer shows for Happy Faces at Llandudno Town Hall for the last four years, but this year is the first time that I took a camera backstage with me. I thought it might be interesting to give you a glimpse into what goes on behind the scenes.

I was the Stage Manager for the Thursday show this year, Those Were The Days, which meant that I was in charge of setting the stage and scenery, having all the props ready at the right time for each performer, and generally trying to make sure that everything backstage went as smoothly as possible.

This is what the stage looked like on a Wednesday for Seaside Special. The backdrop had to be taken down and replaced with the station backdrop, then various pieces of camouflage put up, and sandbags laid along the front of the stage. We also had an old-fashioned radio and a lamp in front of the stage for one of the scenes.

During the show, the majority of the props were kept in a little alcove just beside the stage, so they could easily be taken on and off stage. I made this fake bomb months ago; it got a little battered by the end of the season, but considering it’s only a football covered in papier-mâché, I think it survived quite well!

This the little dressing room that Jay and I used during the summer.

As you can see from the notes on my copy of the running order, things got very busy during the show, which made it really important to make sure everything was in the right place at the right time. The notes in red are Jay’s costume changes, reminding me to get the right costume ready for him; and the notes in green are details of which props were needed for each scene, when to turn the smoke machine on etc.

Despite being so busy, I did manage to get some pictures of Jay when he was on stage.

Part Two is coming soon, with pictures of Jay’s different costumes, including one rather special outfit…

Variety Breaks at the Tynedale Hotel in Llandudno

For the past two and a half years we’ve been hired by the Tynedale hotel in Llandudno for their twice yearly variety breaks. We always look forward to working there, as the shows are fun and the staff are friendly.

Every venue is different and the Tynedale has a couple of unique features which we’ve had to take into consideration. The room is “L” shaped, which means there are two separate audiences to perform to – we have to be careful to make sure both sides can see what we’re doing and that they are both included in everything, rather than focusing on one side of the room.

The second is a particular challenge for magicians, as you can see from this picture. People quite often say that magicians do everything with mirrors, but having the walls behind you covered with mirrors certainly makes things interesting!

We’re back again on Saturday for our final show of this run, and then we’ll be getting ready for the Victorian Extravaganza and the shows at the town hall in Llandudno.

Summer Show Rehearsals

We’re well into rehearsals for the Thursday show, and we’ve all been having great fun learning the new routines. I took my camera to this week’s rehearsal, so here’s a sneaky peek at some of the things we’ve been up to:

No  wartime show would be complete without the Forces Sweethearts.

The boys working on a brand new routine.

The whole cast learning some new choreography.

And finally, I’ve been making some interesting props. Can you guess what this is going to be?

The shows take place in Llandudno town hall over the summer, and all proceeds go to Happy Faces Children’s Charity. The provisional date for the first show is the 10th of May, and it will run every Thursday until the beginning of October.

Llandudno Summer Shows 2012

We haven’t posted much for a while, as the start of the year is always quiet, but things are beginning to get busy again now.

We’re very pleased to be able to tell you that we’ll be taking part in Happy Faces’ summer season in Llandudno town hall again this year. This will be our fourth year as part of the shows, and we’re really looking forward to them.

Happy Faces do a lot of work for disabled and disadvantaged children across North Wales, and we’re always glad to be able to help them.

In 2010 we took part in both of their summer shows: the Seaside Special variety show, and for the first time we were in their 1940s/nostalgia show, Happy Days Are Here Again.

2009 was our first season with Happy Faces, when we were in their variety show, Seaside Follies.

Happy Faces asked us back in 2011, and we took part in Seaside Special once more, and their new 1940s show, Remember the Times.

Over the last few weeks the cast and the producers have been meeting to decide what is happening in this year’s Thursday show. As always, it will be a 1940s/nostalgia show. We are planning a selection of new songs and sketches, but we’ll still be keeping in some of the old favourites from previous years.

There are a few cast changes this year, with one new member, and two old members rejoining us.  Rehearsals started last week, and it’s so nice to be working with everyone again. It’s always strange when the season finishes and we don’t see all our friends every week, so it’s great to be back with them all.

The provisional dates for this year’s shows are every Wednesday from the 2nd of May to the 3rd of October for the variety show, and every Thursday from the 3rd of May to the 4th of October for the 1940s show.

Tickets are not yet on sale, but we’ll be sure to tell you as soon as they are available.

A Very Medieval Summer

This summer, we’ve spent most weekends outside in Rhos on Sea and Conwy, with Costro’s World of Magicka and Mysticism.

Although we’ve done close up magic before, on the streets at the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza; doing whole shows outside was completely new to us. We’ve learnt a whole new set of skills – how to draw in a crowd, picking tricks that are very visual and various other street theatre skills. The show developed with every performance, and evolved to fit the changing nature of each new crowd. Costro has started learning how to juggle, and Eleri is learning how to spin poi.

We met some great people, and we’re really looking forward to working with them again:
